Retrospective of 2024 Achievements and Wishes for 2025

The year 2024 was a landmark period for BEM Recycling, full of achievements and challenges overcome. By solidifying our position as pioneers in the management of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) in Mauritius, we have taken significant steps toward reducing the island’s ecological footprint. Our fruitful collaborations and unwavering community support have enabled us to surpass 14,000 followers on Facebook, a milestone that fills us with gratitude and hope for the future.

Emtel Roadshow: A Renewed Success

In 2024, the partnership between BEM Recycling, Mission Verte, and Emtel led to several successful editions of the Emtel Roadshow. This initiative, aimed at collecting WEEE in various malls across the island, was warmly received by the public. During the November event at Bagatelle Mall, approximately 1,902 kg of electronic waste was collected for transformation into secondary materials. Overall, the 2024 editions, organized in various locations such as Curepipe, Ebène, and Grand-Baie, recovered more than 4,000 kg of WEEE.

This initiative highlights the importance of proximity and citizen mobilization in advancing the environmental cause. A big thanks to everyone who participated in these collections, making it possible to transform waste into new opportunities.

The “Green Option Initiative”: A Step Towards Circular Economy

In October, BEM Recycling collaborated with Serviqual to launch the “Green Option Initiative.” This innovative program aligns with a circular economy approach by offering responsible recycling of electronic devices. The concept is simple: for every product sold by Serviqual, an equivalent used item is recycled. This model helps reduce pressure on natural resources while promoting more responsible consumption.

Successful Collections: Charity Centre of Tamarin and The Good Shop

In 2024, the Charity Centre of Tamarin collected an impressive total of 3,508 kg of waste, thanks to citizens’ commitment. This initiative underscores the importance of community action in reducing the ecological footprint.

Meanwhile, The Good Shop accumulated 6,912 kg of WEEE collected over the past five years of collaboration. With the opening of a new store in New Grove, the team is expanding its impact and offering more collection points across the island.

Remarkable Presentations at MSB and MIE

On October 14, 2024, Berty Malabar, founder and director of BEM Recycling, presented standards focused on the circular economy and the creation of secondary materials at the Mauritius Standards Bureau (MSB). Additionally, on April 25, 2024, Thierry Malabar, our project manager, supported future teachers, currently studying at the Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE), during their sustainability week, which included idea exchanges and presentations. These events highlight the growing recognition of our expertise and strengthen our mission to integrate sustainable practices across all sectors.

An Expanding Network of Partners

BEM Recycling also expanded its network in 2024 with new strategic partnerships. With Archemics, we organized a workshop on electronic waste recycling, collecting over 300 kg of waste during this first initiative. Another awareness workshop was organized with the Livestock Feed team, educating young people in the Pailles region about the importance of waste sorting. Furthermore, BEM welcomed these curious young to its site at la Chaumière.

Inspiring Achievements for the Future

By participating in World Cleanup Day and celebrating Environmental Awareness Month, BEM Recycling affirmed its role as a leader in citizen mobilization for a sustainable future. Additionally, BEM Recycling had the privilege of hosting schoolchildren from various institutions, sharing with this young generation the culture of recycling.

Wishes for 2025

As 2025 begins, we envision a year full of promise. We hope to expand our impact, strengthen our initiatives, and inspire more citizens to act in favor of the ecological transition.

Thank you to our partners, collaborators, and community for supporting us in this mission. Together, let us continue transforming environmental challenges into opportunities. May 2025 be a year of resilience, innovation, and concrete actions for a planet where it is good to live.
